He did not enjoy the trip to the store!

I hope he's not grading my parenting skills.

4 Bs

We are working on a bedtime routine, slowly but surely trying to set a routine in place. The one I have settled on is bath, bottle, book, boob. Most of the time it works pretty well, especially on nights when I am the only one home, which is about 4-5 per week. Sure, I skip the bath some nights, but baby isn’t too dirty yet. He has just started rolling a lot and is mostly contained on a blanket.  I start about 8 pm or so and baby gets all tucked in by 9. This gives me time to do the dishes, put away laundry and diapers that are laying about and to a general tidying up. Then I get ready for bed, sometimes squeeze in a shower and have about 10 minutes to read before it is lights out by 10:45. I will say, it takes me a lot longer to read a book than it used to.

Everything is working out, but we have had some sleeping set-backs. Spencer used to sleep through the night pretty regularly, waking up between 5 am and 6 am. Now, it is much more erratic. Some mornings it is 2 am, mostly 4 am and a (very) few super-awesome 6 ams. I think the change can be attributed to either teething or the cooler weather. Not sure, but I hope it goes back to the way it was. I didn’t appreciate how lucky I was then.  Every time I get used to something or feel like I am getting good at it, it changes.

I never thought much about sleep. I’ve always been a pretty easy and sound sleeper with some bouts of insomnia in times of stress. During my pregnancy, I had a more diffecult time of it when I was unable to sleep in my bed during the eighth month and I began to have some problems staying asleep.  All of these are normal things for the late stages of pregnancy. I’ve been pretty lucky so far with Spencer, as far as sleep goes. He’s slept in a 5 hour block at night almost since birth. This may have contributed to some of my milk supply issues, but it was great as a new parent.

This week, however, because of either his cold, teething or some sort of 5 month growth spurt things have changed. I now have a better idea about sleepless nights and getting up every two hours to nurse. It is a rude shock to have it happen at 5 months.  I am tired all of the time and I look like I’ve been hit by a truck This combined with only being back at work for 3 weeks has really worked me over. Spencer fell asleep a little earlier than normal tonight and the 45 minutes between the time he fell asleep and when I should go to bed have been awesome.  They are over now, but it was great while it lasted. Hopefully, he will go back to his old sleeping patterns soon.

Plans for 2010

My Plans:

1. Keep on breastfeeding

2. Cloth diaper all of the time. Except maybe at night. But much more than I have been.

3. Find a sitter

4. If you ask the husband, get pregnant again.

5. Sort out my real feelings about work and make a decision one way or another. (secretly, I hope it means firing #3)

Spencer’s Plans:

1. Rolling

2. Crawling

3. Finally eating people food instead of just lunging at it.

Year’s End

2009 was quite a year. It is hard to believe that at this time last year, I had only told my sister and my husband that I was pregnant.  Now I have a currently sick, but generally awesome 5 month old. My life was forever and irrevocably changed in 2009 and I wouldn’t change anything about Spencer for the world.  A few things I would change – I would have gotten off to a better start breastfeeding, I think I now know where somethings went wrong. I would also start cloth diapering sooner.  I don’t know what I was scared of. I think I am doing ok so far and 2010 is going to be even better.

Happy 2010! New Year, New Decade!
